Short answer: National Makhana Udyog supplies handpicked makhana (fox nuts) in 4 Sutta+ to 6 Sutta+ grades to US importers, exported through our group company Moso International Pvt Ltd, which holds the USFDA registration. Air trials start from 8 kg, and a 20 ft container carries about 2–2.5 tonnes. Prices are quoted on request.

Plant-based and gluten-free snacks are popular with US shoppers, and fox nuts (gorgon nut / Euryale ferox) are a growing niche in that space. We handle containerised export from the Katihar makhana belt in Bihar to major US ports.

Every export batch is processed at our Katihar facility, checked for foreign particles, graded by size (4 Sutta+ to 6 Sutta+ / 12.7 to 24 mm), handpicked on an inspection conveyor and packed to withstand ocean transit.

What US importers should confirm before ordering

• Prior Notice: the US FDA requires Prior Notice for every food shipment before it arrives in the United States. The importer or customs broker normally files it, and we supply the shipment details.
• Facility registration: the US FDA says most food facilities, including foreign ones, must register and renew their registration every two years. The USFDA registration is held by our group company Moso International Pvt Ltd, and the details can be shared for your supplier file.
• Importer duties (FSVP): US importers generally need a Foreign Supplier Verification Program under the Food Safety Modernization Act, unless exempt. We provide supplier documents, lab reports and batch records for your file.
• Labelling: packs sold in the US need a Nutrition Facts panel, ingredient list and allergen declaration. Private-label packs are printed to your approved artwork.

Roasted & flavoured makhana for US brands

Many US snack brands buy roasted makhana ready to pack, while others roast and season plain kernels themselves. We supply both.

• Process: the makhana is first roasted in an air fryer. Then, on customer demand, seasoning is added for flavouring with avocado oil, olive oil or pure ghee.
• Flavours: Peri Peri, Salt & Pepper and Lemon & Mint.
• Pack: 50 g retail pouches in master cartons, bulk, or your own brand and pack size.
• Other seasonings for private label can be discussed.
• US-style nutrition facts labelling for private label packs. HSN code 20081929.

Roasted makhana packaging

1. Pillow pouch, 10–100 g. Rollstock format is custom-printed laminated film formed, filled and sealed on a fully automatic machine with nitrogen flushing. Preformed pouch format is filled and sealed on semi-automatic equipment with nitrogen flushing.
2. Stand-up zipper pouch, 25–100 g. Resealable, filled and sealed on semi-automatic equipment and nitrogen flushed before final sealing.
3. Composite can or PET jar, 40 g, 50 g, 70 g and 80 g. Oxygen absorbers and/or desiccant sachets may be used as per the packaging specification.
4. Transparent bulk pouch, 250 g, 400 g, 500 g and 1 kg. Supplied for repacking and food-service use.
5. Secondary packaging. Corrugated master cartons.

From enquiry to delivery: how a US order works

We keep the process simple for first-time US buyers.

1. Brief. Send the product (phool, roasted or powder), grade, pack size, quantity and nominated US port.
2. Quotation. We quote EXW, FOB or CIF as agreed. Prices are given on request.
3. Trial. An optional air trial from 8 kg lets you check size, taste and your own lab results.
4. Advance. A 50% advance starts preparation of the material.
5. Preparation and dispatch. Lead time is 2 to 15 working days, then loading at Kolkata, Haldia, Mundra or Nhava Sheva. Ocean transit time is additional.
6. Balance. 50% against the commercial invoice (LC accepted), with the shipping documents and the shipment details your broker needs for FDA Prior Notice.
