HSN Code for Makhana (Fox Nuts): 20081921, 20081929 and 20081922 Explained
Which HSN code applies to popped, roasted and powdered makhana, and where to use it on invoices, GST returns and export documents.
If you buy, sell or export makhana (fox nuts), the first form you fill will ask for an HSN code. The code you enter decides how the invoice, the GST filing and the export shipping bill are classified. Here is a simple guide to the three HSN codes we use at National Makhana Udyog, and when each one applies.
HSN codes for makhana at a glance
| Product | HSN code |
|---|---|
| Popped makhana (phool makhana) | 20081921 |
| Roasted and flavoured makhana | 20081929 |
| Makhana powder | 20081922 |
These are the codes we use on our own documents. Please confirm the final code for your product with your CA or customs broker before filing, because the correct code depends on how the product is processed and packed.
What is an HSN code?
HSN stands for Harmonised System of Nomenclature. It is a worldwide product-coding system used by customs offices. The first 6 digits are the same in most countries, and India adds more digits, so Indian invoices and shipping bills use an 8-digit code. For makhana, the first 6 digits are 200819.
HSN code for popped makhana: 20081921
This is the code for phool makhana, the popped, unflavoured kernel that is graded from 3 Murra to 6 Sutta+. It is the main code for bulk trade, wholesale supply and most export orders. See our makhana grades chart for the size of each grade in mm.
HSN code for roasted makhana: 20081929
Roasted and flavoured makhana (for example peri peri or salt and pepper) is processed further after popping, so it is shown under its own code, 20081929. Read more on our roasted and flavoured makhana page.
HSN code for makhana powder: 20081922
Makhana powder (fox nut flour) used by food brands and manufacturers is classified as 20081922. Details are on our makhana powder page.
Where you will need the HSN code
- Tax invoice: the HSN code must be printed against each item.
- GST return: sales and purchases are reported by HSN code.
- Export documents: the shipping bill, commercial invoice and packing list carry the code, and the importer's customs clearance uses it too.
- Labels and price lists: brands often print the code on trade documents for buyers.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the popped makhana code for roasted or flavoured products.
- Copying a code from another seller without checking the product description on the invoice.
- Using a 6-digit code on Indian invoices where 8 digits are expected.
- Using different codes for the same product on the invoice and the shipping bill.

Frequently asked questions

How many digits should the HSN code have?
Indian tax invoices and shipping bills use 8 digits. The first 6 digits (200819) are common internationally.
What is the GST rate on makhana?
The rate can change with the form of the product and with government notifications. Please check the current rate on the official GST portal or with your CA instead of relying on an old figure.
